A total heat exchanger, also known as an energy recovery ventilator (ERV), is a device designed to transfer both heat and moisture between two airstreams, improving energy efficiency in ventilation systems. It plays a critical role in maintaining indoor air quality and reducing energy consumption by reclaiming waste heat and moisture from exhaust air and using it to pre-condition incoming fresh air.

How a Total Heat Exchanger Works:

  1. Exhaust Air vs. Fresh Air: A total heat exchanger has two airstreams: the exhaust air (from inside the building) and fresh air (from outside). The device works by exchanging heat and humidity between these airstreams.
  2. Heat Transfer: In winter, the warm, humid exhaust air transfers heat to the incoming cold, dry fresh air. In summer, the cooler, dry indoor air helps pre-cool and dehumidify the incoming warm, humid outdoor air.
  3. Moisture Transfer: In addition to heat, a total heat exchanger also transfers moisture. This helps in maintaining balanced humidity levels indoors, which is essential for comfort and health.

Types of Heat Exchangers:

  • Sensible Heat Exchangers: Transfer only heat (temperature), not moisture.
  • Total (Enthalpy) Heat Exchangers: Transfer both heat and moisture, making them more energy-efficient for areas with variable humidity levels.
