Key Components:

  1. Screw Compressor:

    The screw compressor is the heart of the system, consisting of two helical rotors (male and female screws). As these screws rotate, they compress the refrigerant gas, increasing its pressure and temperature.
  2. Flooded Evaporator:

    In a flooded evaporator, the refrigerant is in direct contact with the cooling water. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the water, lowering the water's temperature. This design ensures that most of the evaporator surface is used for heat exchange, increasing efficiency.
  3. Condenser:

    The water-cooled condenser transfers the heat from the refrigerant to the cooling water. Typically, a separate cooling tower is used to expel this heat to the atmosphere, which allows the refrigerant to condense back into a liquid.
  4. Expansion Valve:

    The expansion valve regulates the flow of refrigerant entering the evaporator. It drops the refrigerant's pressure, turning it into a low-pressure, low-temperature mixture before it absorbs heat in the evaporator.
  5. Cooling Water Circuit:

    This system uses a water loop to remove heat from the condenser. The water flows to a cooling tower where it releases the absorbed heat to the surrounding air.

Working Principle:

  1. Compression:

    The refrigerant gas enters the screw compressor, where it's compressed to a high pressure and temperature.
  2. Condensation:

    The hot, pressurized gas moves to the condenser. Water from the cooling tower passes through the condenser coils, absorbing heat from the refrigerant. As the heat dissipates, the refrigerant condenses into a high-pressure liquid.
  3. Expansion:

    The liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop significantly, preparing it to absorb heat.
  4. Evaporation:

    In the flooded evaporator, the refrigerant comes into contact with water, absorbing its heat. This cools the water for recirculation in the air conditioning or industrial cooling process. The refrigerant, in turn, evaporates into a gas.
  5. Recycling:

    The low-pressure refrigerant gas returns to the compressor, and the cycle begins again.
